iEngage Berwyn - Student Volunteers

May 8th + 9th, 2015

Volunteer T-shirts!
In order to make sure the students were aware of their jobs, the layout of the school and the vibe of the conference, we hosted a Volunteer Meeting on Monday May 4 for about 30 minutes. We had over 40 students show up to the meeting. We got acquainted with the school and I explained the conference. I felt that this meeting was necessary for the success of the volunteers on Saturday.

All schools had iSWAT
Poster Sessions
iAsk PIT Crew Tech Table

At a typical educational conference, there are adults filling the rooms, adults serving the food, adults handling the registration, adults ushering people to the correct rooms, etc. Well we thought, why not involved kids too?! This whole conference is to benefit students, so why not invite students to participate? With students being our most abundant resource in the district, it was an easy choice. Honestly, I cannot believe that this day has already come and gone. It seems like just yesterday that we were at our first iEngage-Berywn meeting and planning what date it would happen. There are so many take-aways from the day that I enjoyed as an educator, but seeing as I was in charge of the volunteer committee, I will be focusing more on the volunteer/student side of the conference to mix things up a bit.

The first several months of planning we were concerned that we wouldn't have enough student volunteers. Yet by the time we got through April, we had more that 50 student and 10 adult volunteers! They ranged from 3rd grade - 8th grade from all eight schools in the district. We couldn't believe it and got started right away on making some fun, productive jobs for them.

As you can imagine, Saturday, was quite a bit more involved than just a walk through the halls! Students participated in a number of ways throughout the conference.

Some highlights included:

At the end of the day on Saturday, the students had been so productive and were such a joy to have at the conference. It was a great success to have them there participating. We could not have done it without them. Till next year!
